A quick one day exercise to make CG food again. This time I chose the king of fruits, the durian. The objective of this practice is to be able to generate a durian via non-destructive modeling techniques so that every key aspect that makes up the fruit can be tweaked at any given time. The results are pretty decent but there are definitely more room for improvement to achieve better results. The entire durian is also textured with procedural shaders. I'm especially pleased with how the fruit looks - it's so lumpy and custardy. For some reason, I prefer the Eevee render more than Cycles.
Control durian's amount of pie slicing by rotating the Empty acting as a driver. The fruit inside will follow accordingly.
Another Empty object drives the shape of the durian via a Displacement modifier. You can move, rotate or scale it until you find a shape of your liking.
Similar to the shape randomizer, another Empty object only drives the fruit's shape. The pocket on the durian shell follows the shape of the fruit in order to hold it nicely.
A cutter object that slices the fruits apart can be moved or rotated to acquire different results.
A list of modifiers to showcase how the durian and its fruits are created from start to finish.
